Do I need an external FireWire drive to record audio with a laptop?

We have tested MOTU hardware and software with the internal drives of currently shipping Mac and PC laptops successfully. Despite the slower specs of these drives, they should be fine for small or medium sized projects. On large projects, especially those where you need to record many tracks of audio simultaneously we would recommend a 7200 RPM or faster FireWire drive using a quality FireWire chipset such as Oxford 911 or 922.
