Background processing creates Analysis files that are needed when any Pure DSP functions are called. When you perform any Pitch Shifting or Time Compression the Analysis Files lets Digital Performer perform theses functions much more efficiently. Also, in DP 4.5, the Background Processing displays processes for DP's Beat Detection Engine.

Background Processing has a number of preferences that you can use to tailor it for how you work. In addition to its options for analyzing soundbites for DSP functions, you can choose what sort of beat/tempo detection processes occur, both globally and per project. Additionally, you can choose whether these beat/tempo detection processes are displayed in the Background Processing window, or whether they are hidden.
