Here are basic instructions to help get you started with Cakewalk software, such as Sonar, using MOTU audio interfaces. These instructions apply to Sonar, as well as other current generation Cakewalk software applications.

Cakewalk audio programs have always supported legacy wave audio (MME). Within the past few years Sonar has introduced WDM and ASIO support, both of which are supported by MOTU audio interfaces. When running the MOTU Core or FireWire CD installer choose the Multimedia Audio Driver and ASIO drivers. By doing so, you will have access to either the MME, WDM, or the ASIO driver. Consult Cakewalk for recommendations as to which driver to use with your setup.

PCI-324 users: Open the MOTU PCI-324 Console before accessing Sonar. Set the clock source to Internal (if there are no digital devices connected to your interface's digpital inputs). Select a sample rate. Assign the bank you intend on using, for example, with a 2408mkII choose analog for Bank A, ADAT for Bank B, and SPDIF for Bank C. In order to access the inputs and output sources, "Enable Routing" must be checked. Enable the inputs you wish to use and assign the output sources you also wish to use to "From Computer." * For additional connections with digital devices you can refer to your Hardware manual for further instructions.

PCI-424 users: Open MOTU PCI Audio Setup before accessing Sonar. Set the clock source to Internal (if there are no digital devices connected to your interface's digital inputs). Select a sample rate. Assign the bank you intend on using, for example, with a 2408mk3 choose analog for Bank A, ADAT for Bank B, and SPDI for Bank C. In order to access the inputs and output sources, Enable Routing must be checked. Enable the inputs and outputs you wish to use from Sonar. * For additional connections with digital devices you can refer to your Hardware manual for further instructions.

FireWire users: Open the MOTU Audio Setup before accessing Sonar. Click on the General tab and set the clock source to Internal (if there are no digital devices connected to your interface's digital inputs). Select a sample rate. If you are using any ADAT lighpipe devices, enable the ADAT I/O ports you wish to use with Sonar. * For additional connections with digital devices you can refer to your Hardware manual for further instructions.

If you are using your MOTU audio interface for the first time with Sonar, you may be prompted to run the Wave Profiler upon launching the application. When the profiler is complete, Sonar will resume opening.

In Sonar:

1. Under the Options menu, select Audio.
2. Click on the Advanced tab at the top of the window and choose either MME, WDM, or ASIO from the Driver Mode (only found in Sonar 2.2 or above). This will require a restart of the application.
3. After restarting Sonar, go back to the Audio menu.
4. Click on the Drivers Tab and select the inputs and outputs that you plan to use with your MOTU Hardware. This will require a restart of the application.
5. After restarting, go back to the Audio menu. Click on the General Tab and choose ports for the Playback and Recording Timing Master settings. For example, 2408: Analog 1-2 & 2408: Analog 1-2.
6. In this window you should also choose the Sample Rate of the File you are about to record. Be sure to choose the sample rate that matches your MOTU Audio Hardware. If you are working with a digital transfer, you should be extra careful that the sample rate of Sonar and MOTU Hardware match the sample rate of the digital source.
7. Choose your File Bit Depth - 16 or 24 bit.
8. If you are using the WDM drivers, you can adjust the Mixing latency for monitoring by adjusting the "Buffer Size". A lower buffer would allow for low latency monitoring through an effect or virtual instrument plug in.
9. Add an audio track.
10. You will now find the MOTU inputs and outputs that were selected previously in Sonar's Driver menu. Consult the Sonar manual for further information about creating and assigning audio tracks.
