AVB Presets

This document outlines the presets that ship with the MOTU 1248, 8M, and 16A AVB audio interfaces. Each of the eight factory presets are described below with general information and usage examples. Then, each interface's unique Routing and Device Tab configurations are explained with pictures.

For more information on the AVB presets, check out this page for training videos.

Notes on using this document

  • Throughout the document, all links and pictures can be clicked to view larger images.
  • Unless noted, the pictures and values shown for channel numbers correspond to your interface's configuration when connected via ThunderBolt. If connected via USB, it is possible your interface's routing may be altered due to a change in channel count.
  • The down arrow image was generated for this document, and does not appear in the MOTU AVB Control Web App. This image signifies vertical cropping was done to the Routing Grid, and eliminated unnecessary rows for formatting and simplification purposes.

Audio Interface

What it does

  • Configures your AVB device as a standard USB or Thunderbolt audio interface
  • Enables all physical input and output banks on interface
  • Routes physical inputs to on-board mixer and To Computer audio streams
  • Routes From Computer audio streams to physical outputs

Uses

  • Record audio in Digital Audio Workstation
  • Play audio back from Digital Audio Workstation, system audio, or audio from any other application

How does it look on your interface

Device Tab

When applying the Audio Interface preset, the Device Tab is configured in the following way:

  • Sample Rate and Clock Mode: Whatever setting you had before applying the preset will remain: presets do not change the Sample Rate or Clock Mode.
  • Input Settings: "Mic", "Guitar", and "Analog" input channel names are set to their default name. Each input's Trim is set to 0, and all Phase, 48V, and Pad, buttons are disengaged, the default status.
  • Output Settings: All "Phones", "Main", "Monitor", and "Analog" output channel names are set to their default name. The volume settings for the phones and analog output channels do not change, they are left at the same level as before the preset was applied.
  • AVB Stream Setup: Number of Input Streams and Number of Output Streams are both set to 0.
  • Input Banks: The Mic, Guitar, Analog, SPDIF, ADAT A, and ADAT B banks are all enabled.
  • Output Banks: The Phones, Main, Monitor, Analog, SPDIF, ADAT A, and ADAT B banks are all enabled.
  • Mixer Setup: The Number of Inputs is set to 32. This enables 32 channels on your on-board digital mixer.
  • Computer Setup: The From Device To Computer channel count is set to 32 and the From Computer to Device channel count is set to 34.

Note: When connected via USB, both the From Device to Computer and the From Computer to Device channel count is set for 24 channels. Be aware this will change how the routing grid looks.

Routing Tab

When applying the Audio Interface preset, inputs are routed to outputs in the following way:

  • Physical Inputs: The 1248's Analog Inputs (consisting of four Mic inputs, two Guitar hi-Z inputs, and eight 1/4" TRS inputs) and Digital Inputs (consisting of stereo SPDIF and two banks of ADAT optical) are routed in successive order to the 32 To Computer output audio streams and the 32 Mix In channels, as defined on the Device Tab.

    • Click here to see an expanded view of how the physical inputs are routed to the To Computer output audio streams. This routing allows you to record each of the physical inputs on their own independent audio track in your DAW.
    • Click here to see an expanded view of how the physical inputs are routed to the Mix In channels. This routing allows you to send signal from each input to its own independent mixer channel in the on-board mixer. Here you can process your signal using the on-board effects or create monitor and aux mixes.

  • From Computer Inputs: The From Computer input audio streams bring audio from your host DAW or system's playback, through independent audio streams, to your interface, (thus considered inputs). The first four From Computer input streams are routed to your 1/4" TRS Main Outs and Monitor Outs. The next eight channels (5-12) feed the eight other 1/4" TRS Analog Outputs. The two sets of Phones receive From Computer audio streams 13-16 (two per headphone jack), followed next by SPDIF stereo digital outputs (17-18), and the two banks of digital outputs, ADAT A and ADAT B (Bank A: 19-26 and Bank B: 27-34).

    • Click here to see an expanded view of how the From Computer input audio streams are routed to the physical outputs on your interface.

Device Tab

When applying the Audio Interface preset, the Device Tab is configured in the following way:

  • Sample Rate and Clock Mode: Whatever setting you had before applying the preset will remain: presets do not change the Sample Rate or Clock Mode.
  • Input Settings: "VLimit Lookahead" status is unaffected; whichever status you had before applying the preset remains. "Mic Instrument" input channel names are set to their default name. Each input's Trim is set to 0, and all Phase, 48V, Pad, VLimit, and Soft Clip buttons are disengaged, the default status.
  • Output Settings: All output channel names are set to their default name. The volume settings for the phones and analog output channels do not change, they are left at the same level as before the preset was applied.
  • AVB Stream Setup: Number of Input Streams and Number of Output Streams are both set to 0.
  • Input Banks: The Mic Inst, ADAT A, and ADAT B banks are all enabled.
  • Output Banks: The Phones, Analog, ADAT A, and ADAT B banks are all enabled.
  • Mixer Setup: The Number of Inputs is set to 24. This enables 24 channels on your on-board digital mixer.
  • Computer Setup: The From Device To Computer channel count is set to 24, and the From Computer to Device channel count is set to 26.

Note: When connected via USB, both the From Device to Computer and the From Computer to Device channel count is set for 24 channels. Be aware this will change how the routing grid looks.

  • Computer Setup: The From Device To Computer and From Computer to Device channel count is set to 0.

Routing Tab

When applying the Stand-Alone Mixer preset, inputs are routed to outputs in the following way:

  • Physical Inputs: The 1248's Analog Inputs (consisting of four Mic inputs, two Guitar hi-Z inputs, and eight 1/4" TRS inputs) and Digital Inputs (consisting of stereo SPDIF and two banks of ADAT optical) are routed in successive order to the 32 Mix In channels, as defined on the Device Tab.

This routing allows you to send signal from each input to its own independent mixer channel in the on-board mixer. Here you can process your signal using the on-board effects or create monitor and aux mixes.

  • Mixer Returns: These return busses carry signal from your AVB interface's on-board mixer back to your interface's mixing matrix (thus considered inputs). The Main Mix is mirrored in three places, the first two Phones channels (Phones jack one, on the left of the front panel), the 1/4" TRS Main Outputs, and the digital co-axial S/PDIF output. The Monitor Mix, feeds Phones channels three and four (jack two, on the right), and the 1/4" TRS Monitor Outputs on the back panel.

The first four Aux Mixes , Aux channels 1-8, are routed to the bank of eight 1/4" TRS outputs, Analog Outs 1-8. Due to the other output banks on the 1248 being disabled by the preset, the Aux channels 9-14 cannot be utilized, as there are no available outputs to use as a destination. Alter this preset by enabling the ADAT Output banks on the Device tab if additional Aux channels are needed.
