Using MOTU audio interfaces with Sonar and other Cakewalk applications - Part 2

Here are basic instructions to help get you started with monitoring input sources while recording through Cakewalk software, using MOTU audio interfaces. These instructions apply to Sonar, as well as most other Cakewalk software applications.

Direct input monitoring through MOTU Audio Interfaces and Sonar: In order to monitor inputs directly through your MOTU audio interface while recording into Sonar, you'll need to use the CueMix features from your MOTU interface. If you are using a PCI-324, PCI-424, 828mkII, 828mk3, 896HD, 896mk3, Traveler, UltraLite, UltraLite-mk3, or 8pre, you can CueMix, a virtual mixer that allows you to assign inputs to your interface's outputs, as well as control volume and pan for a monitor mix.

The advantage of using CueMix is that the monitoring latency will be significantly less than Sonar's "Input Monitor" feature. While recording tracks within Sonar, using assigned inputs from your MOTU interface, CueMix can provide you a near-zero latency monitor mix. When using CueMix you will not be able to use real time host plug-in effects through Sonar's "Input Monitor" feature.

PCI-324 users:

Open the PCI-324 CueMix Console and unmute the Master Fader. On the right hand side you will see four stereo bus inserts, allowing you to select outputs from an interface connected to your PCI-324. Select a bus output and unmute the inputs you wish to hear through the selected output. You will now be able to directly monitor from the unmuted inputs while recording into Sonar

PCI- 424 users:

Open the PCI-424 CueMix Console and unmute the Master Fader. Above the master fader you will find a drop down menu, allowing you to select from all the stereo outputs from the MOTU interface(s) connected to the PCI-424. Each output is a bus. With the PCI-424, you can assign multiple inputs through these busses. Select an output bus and unmute the inputs you wish to hear through the selected bus output. The DSP and PCI meters in the top right-hand corner will help you monitor the performance of your PCI-424 card. Once you've set up CueMix, you will then be able to directly monitor from the unmuted inputs while recording into Sonar.

828mkII, 828mk3, 896HD, 896mk3, Traveler, Traveler-mk3, UltraLite, UltraLite-mk3, and 8pre users:

Open the FireWire CueMix Console and unmute the Master Fader. Above the master fader you will find a drop down menu, allowing you to select an output from your FireWire interface interface. With the 828mkII, 896HD, Traveler, UltraLite, or 8pre, you can set up a mix through four stereo outputs simultaneously, per interface*. There are four tabs located on the bottom of the CueMix console, allowing you to switch between four input monitor mixes, which can be used simultaneously. Select a bus, an output, and unmute the inputs you wish to hear through the selected output(s). You will now be able to directly monitor from the unmuted inputs while recording into Sonar.

828 and 896 users:

The 828 and 896 both feature CueMix Plus, which allows you to monitor one mono or stereo input at a time with no latency. Open the MOTU FireWire console and select one mono or stereo input from the "Monitor Inputs" drop down menu. You will now be able to directly monitor from the selected inputs while recording into Sonar

  • If you are using multiple 828mkIIs, 896HDs, or Travelers, you will need to open a CueMix console for each interface.
