How to sync Paris with Performer or Digital Performer

This page describes how to sync Performer with the Ensoniq PARIS system.

Technical Support

Q: How do I sync Performer/Digital Performer to Ensoniq's new PARIS system ?

A: PARIS can use FreeMIDI 1.34 or higher with "Emulate OMS" checked instead of using OMS. This allows it to sync with Performer/Digital Performer.

Please follow these instructions to set up your system correctly :

1) Use your Extensions Manager Control Panel to create an extension set that does not contain OMS. FreeMIDI is replacing the OMS functionality. If you need to use OMS for other applications, create a different extension set for it. Please remember that you must restart your computer after making changes in Extensions Manager before they will take affect.

2) Set up FreeMIDI 1.34
a. Launch FreeMIDI Setup 1.34
b. Go to the File menu and select "FreeMID Preferences...".
c. Under Software Compatibility, check "FreeMIDI Applications only"
d. Under Extras, check "Emulate OMS".
e. Under MIDI Configuration, Applications:, check "Inter-application MIDI".
f. Hit the "OK" button which will close the FreeMIDI Preferences dialog box.
g. Save the changes and quit the FreeMIDI Setup application.

3) Setting up Performer/Digital Performer
a. Launch Performer/Digital Performer.
b. Open the file that you want to use.
c. If using Digital Peformer, Go to the Basics menu and select "MIDI Only" in the Audio System menu.
d. Go to the Basics menu and select "Receive Sync...".
e. Choose "Inter-application MIDI" as the source of external MTC sync from the pop-up box next to "Sync to port:"
f. Under "Type of sync:", select "MTC, DTL, or DTLe".
g. Under "SMPTE Frame Format" select the same SMPTE frame rate as shown in the PARIS Project Window. (The default is 30 fps.)
h. Hit the "OK" button to close the dialog box.
i. Go to the Basics menu and select "Transmit Sync". The setting for "Transmit MTC via port(s):" should be set to "None".
j. Finally, go to the Basics menu and select "Slave to External Sync".
k. Press Play in Performer. (It will blink, waiting for incoming time
code.

4) Setting up PARIS
a. Run the PARIS application.
b. From the Project Window, choose "MIDI Setup..." from the Settings menu.
c. This will open the MIDI Setup dialog box.
d. Open the pop-up box labeled "Select MIDI Time Code Output".
e. Select "Digital Performer" or "Performer" from the list, depending on which product you are using. PARIS will send MTC to this destination.
f. Hit OK in the dialog box to close it. This setting will save with the Project.

When you begin to "play" the Project from the PARIS transport controls (in the Transport Window or using the Control 16 hardware), MTC will be generated by PARIS and Performer will follow the transport and location commands (Marker location, stop and start) from PARIS.
