Getting started with BPM

Congratulations on purchasing your copy of BPM 1.5. This latest version builds upon the success of BPM with features to keep your ideas rolling. Among them are updated sounds with the addition of Beat Box Anthology to expand your creative palette. Also, we've added an expansive Remote section to assign controllers and speed up your workflow.

In this article, we will explore some common installation problems and their solutions. Like any great experience, BPM 1.5 is definitely worth the effort.

So, you've just finished installing your fresh copy of BPM 1.5. As you eagerly await the apocalyptic beat dropping, you are instead greeted with either of the following messages:

or:

Not to worry, this is BPM's way of telling us that the soundbanks are not in the appropriate locations. We'll address these different errors in two parts.

First, we need to copy only the BPM and BPM.ufs1 files to the following directory:

Mac Users look here:

Startup Drive (Mac HD) > Library > Application Support > MOTU > BPM

Start on the system drive and be careful not to drop these files into your Home folder

(Hint: You can also drag drop the BPM.ufs and BPM.ufs to an external volume and place alias files in the directory above (right-click > make alias). If you choose this route, be sure to rename the alias file to match the original files (BPM.ufs and BPM.ufs1, ANY EXTRA CHARACTERS/SPACES IN THE ALIAS NAME WILL BREAK THE LINK TO THE SOUNDS)

Windows Users look here:

Startup Drive (C:) > Program Files > MOTU > BPM

(Hint: You can also drag drop the BPM.ufs and BPM.ufs to an external volume and place alias files in the directory above (right-click > create shortcut). If you choose this route, be sure to rename the shortcut file to match the original files (BPM.ufs and BPM.ufs1, ANY EXTRA CHARACTERS/SPACES IN THE SHORTCUT NAME WILL BREAK THE LINK TO THE SOUNDS)

Once you've copied the files or created and renamed the alias, launch BPM to confirm that presets are listed in BPM's browser (see below)

If you are still encountering the second error message, BPM is looking for the Beat Box Anthology soundbank. These sounds are so unique that they require a separate authorization and directory from the rest of our BPM sounds.

To obtain authorization, we've included a serial number for Beat Box Anthology on a green postcard. There are some basic steps to follow in order to obtain the license file and download it to your iLok key.
First, setup your iLok.com login and check the contents of your key. You will notice a BPM authorization is already on your dongle. If you encounter any problems here, make sure you have the latest iLok drivers and client software (available in the Downloads section of iLok.com)

We also need to login to www.ultimatesoundbank.com to create an account and register Beat Box Anthology with the serial number (follow the link for REGISTRATION on the main page to get started). Be sure to include and double-check your iLok login ID as this will allow you to download and utilize the license file.

Once registered, check back with your iLok.com account and follow the link to Download Licenses. When completed properly, you will see a Beat Box Anthology license and be presented the option to download this file to your dongle.

Whew! We've got the license now back to the directories. Only a few more steps to beat-making bliss.

That's it! After these pieces are in place, you will have access to 19GB of samples with the flexibility to make them your own. To explore, open up one of the included tutorial files on the BPM installer disc and follow along in your BPM User Guide or launch BPM and try loading a Kit + Pattern to start enjoying through the fruit of your efforts.
