How do I use my MOTU Symphonic Instrument sounds in MachFive?

If you have both MachFive and the MOTU Symphonic Instrument, you can use the sounds from MSI in MachFive. To do so, MSI must be installed and authorized (i.e., an iLok containing your MSI authorization must be connected).

In MachFive 1.x:

When running the latest MachFive 1.x installer, it will check to see if the MOTU Symphonic Instrument is installed. If so, it will ask you if you'd like to create an MSI soundbank in your MachFive Sounds Folder. If you choose Yes, you will be prompted to locate your MachFive Sounds Folder. The next time you open MachFive, choose Rescan MachFive Folder from the Soundbank's "More" menu, and you will then see "MSI" in your list of soundbanks.

If you install MSI after running the latest MachFive update, or for any other reason need to create an MSI soundbank for MachFive manually, you can do it just like with any other .DAT file in MachFive:

  • In the Finder, go to your MachFive Sounds Folder and create a new folder. Name this folder "MSI.M5b".
  • Locate your MSI.dat file. Create an alias to the MSI.dat file and place it in the MSI.M5b folder you just created. Make sure the name of the alias is exactly "MSI.dat"; if the file is named "MSI.dat alias" or anything else, it will not work.
  • In MachFive, choose Rescan MachFive Folder from the Soundbank's "More" menu. You will now see "MSI" in your list of soundbanks.

In MachFive 2.x:

Simply navigate to the MSI.dat file in the MachFive sounds browser, mount the image, and load the desired preset.
